Proof it's been done

A sweep you can show someone, not just take our word for

A chimney sweep certificate is a written record that your chimney or stove flue has been swept and checked by a professional. Many home insurers ask for proof of regular sweeping, especially if you ever need to claim after a chimney fire. Landlords and letting agents use it to show the fire or stove in a rented home has been looked after.

We are Adele and Sian, sisters and HETAS-certified sweeps covering Essex and Hertfordshire. We don't charge extra for the certificate. Every sweep finishes with a smoke test and the paperwork, so you have it ready for your insurer, landlord or letting agent. If you're not sure how often you need one, read how often you should sweep your chimney.

What a sweep certificate is for

Who asks for one, what goes on it and why it matters who signs it.

What the certificate records

A sweeping certificate typically records the date of the sweep, which appliance or flue was swept, the sweep's details, the smoke test result, and any notes or recommendations we have for you.

For your home insurance

Many home insurers ask for proof of regular sweeping, especially after a chimney fire. Keep each year's certificate somewhere safe so you can show it if you ever need to make a claim.

For landlords and letting agents

Landlords have a duty to keep appliances and flues in rented homes safe. An annual sweep with a certificate is the simplest way to show it, and many letting agents ask for one before or during a tenancy.

For house sales and buyers

Selling a house with a wood burner or open fire? A recent certificate shows buyers the chimney has been looked after. Buying one? Ask the seller when it was last swept, and book a sweep before you light it.

After a chimney fire or claim

If you've had a chimney fire, don't use the fire again until it has been checked. We sweep, smoke test and can add a CCTV inspection to look for damage. Know the signs of a chimney fire.

From a HETAS-certified sweep

A certificate is only worth something if the person signing it knows what they're doing. We are HETAS certified and fully insured, so the paperwork you hand over carries weight. Here are 5 things to check before booking a sweep.

Who needs a chimney sweep certificate

If you're on this list, it's worth booking a sweep with a certificate at least once a year.

  • Homeowners whose insurance asks for regular sweeping
  • Landlords with a wood burner, multi-fuel stove or open fire
  • Letting agents managing lets with a chimney or stove
  • Anyone selling a house with a stove or open fire
  • Holiday let owners with a log burner for guests
  • Anyone who has had a chimney fire

How you get your certificate

Same visit, no chasing. Here's what happens when we come out.

  1. You book a sweep

Call us on 0330 133 2121 or send us a quote request. Tell us what you've got and whether the certificate is for an insurer, a landlord or a letting agent.

  2. We sweep the chimney

We sheet up, sweep the flue and do a visual inspection of the chimney and your stove or fire. A standard sweep takes 45 minutes to an hour, and we clean up after ourselves.

  3. We do a chimney smoke test

We put smoke into the flue to check it's drawing properly and not leaking anywhere it shouldn't. If something needs a closer look, we can add a CCTV flue inspection.

  4. You get your certificate

We give you a sweeping certificate for your insurer, landlord or letting agent, along with any advice. If the stove itself needs attention, we can look at stove servicing.

Landlords: carbon monoxide alarms In England, landlords must fit a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance, except gas cookers, and check alarms are working at the start of each tenancy. That covers wood burners, multi-fuel stoves and open fires. We sweep and certify solid fuel chimneys only. We can't certify gas appliances, those need a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Sweep certificate questions

What is a chimney sweep certificate?

It's a written record that your chimney or stove flue has been swept by a professional. It typically records the date, the appliance or flue swept, the sweep's details, the smoke test result and any notes or recommendations. We give you one at the end of every sweep.

Do I need a chimney sweep certificate for insurance?

Many home insurers ask for proof of regular sweeping, especially after a chimney fire. Check your policy wording to see what yours says. Keeping a certificate from each sweep is the easiest way to show the chimney has been looked after if you ever need to claim.

Do landlords need a chimney sweep certificate?

Landlords have a duty to keep appliances and flues in their properties safe. An annual sweep with a certificate is the simplest way to show you've done that, and many letting agents and insurers ask for one. Landlords in England must also fit a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance, except gas cookers.

How often should I get my chimney swept?

At least once a year, and twice a year if you burn wood regularly. You get a new certificate each time, so you always have an up to date one for your insurer, landlord or letting agent.

What if my chimney fails the smoke test?

We won't tell you it's fine when it isn't. We'll explain what we found, note it on the certificate and advise you not to use the fire or stove until it's put right. We may suggest a CCTV inspection to see exactly where the problem is, and any repairs are quoted before work starts.

Can you sweep multiple properties for a landlord or agent?

Yes. We sweep for landlords and letting agents across Essex and Hertfordshire, and each flue gets its own smoke test and certificate. Ask us about several flues or properties and we'll work out the visits with you.
