How Often Should You Sweep Your Chimney?
The general rule most UK chimney professionals, including HETAS, work to is:
Wood burners and multi-fuel stoves: once a year minimum, twice a year if you burn heavily through winter
Open fires burning wood: twice a year, ideally once before the season starts and once partway through if you use it often
Smokeless coal: at least once a year
Oil-fired appliances: once a year
Gas fires: once a year, even though they produce far less soot, the flue still needs checking
The honest answer is that "how often" depends more on how much you actually use your fire than on a fixed calendar rule. A stove lit most evenings through a cold winter builds up creosote and soot far faster than one used occasionally on weekends. If in doubt, err on the side of an extra sweep, a build-up of creosote is one of the leading causes of chimney fires, and it's avoidable with regular sweeping.

How Long Does a Chimney Sweep Actually Take?
For a routine sweep with no major issues, most appointments take 45 minutes to an hour. That covers:
Laying dust sheets and protecting the room
Sweeping the flue with brushes and a vacuum to remove soot and creosote
A visual inspection of the flue and appliance
A smoke test to check the draw is working properly
Clean-up before we leave
A few things can extend that time:
Bird nests or heavy blockages add time, since these need to be cleared carefully rather than just brushed through
A CCTV inspection, if you add one, typically adds another 20-30 minutes for the full camera survey
Difficult access, such as multiple flues or an awkward loft hatch, can also add time

What Happens If You Leave It Too Long?
Skipping a sweep doesn't cause an immediate problem, which is exactly why it's easy to put off. The risk builds quietly: creosote and soot accumulate, airflow gets restricted, and in the worst case a chimney fire can start from a spark igniting built-up deposits inside the flue. Beyond fire risk, a dirty or blocked flue also pushes carbon monoxide back into the room rather than safely out through the chimney, which is a serious and sometimes fatal risk with no obvious warning signs.
None of this requires panic, it just means treating chimney sweeping the same way you'd treat an annual boiler service: routine, not optional.
