Core service

Chimney and stove sweeping

We sweep wood burners, multi-fuel stoves, open fires and solid fuel appliances using power and hand rods, whichever suits the flue. Every sweep ends with a smoke test to prove the chimney draws properly and doesn't leak into the house.

  • Wood burning and multi-fuel stoves
  • Open fireplaces
  • Steel liners and twin-wall flues
  • Smoke test and sweeping certificate

Maintenance

Stove servicing

A clean flue is only half the job. A stove with worn seals or a cracked baffle burns badly and makes more creosote.

Rope seals and glass

Door and glass rope seals replaced so the stove can be controlled properly, and the glass cleaned.

Baffles and firebricks

The baffle or throat plate is checked and cleared, and cracked firebricks are replaced.

Air controls and door catches

Air controls freed up and door catches adjusted so the stove seals and draws as it should.

Structural

Chimney repairs

Damage to a chimney stack gets worse every winter. We repair the problems we find while sweeping, so a small crack doesn't turn into a leak or a loose pot.

  • Re-pointing loose or missing mortar
  • Chimney pot repair and replacement
  • Stack and chimney breast repairs
  • Advice on damp and water getting in around the stack
Prevention

Cowls, bird guards and rain caps

The right cowl stops birds, rain and downdraughts. We fit one to suit your pot and your appliance.

Bird guards

Stop jackdaws and other birds nesting in your flue, while still letting smoke out. See our bird nesting guide.

Anti-downdraught cowls

Help with smoke blowing back into the room on windy days.

Rain caps and capping unused flues

Keep water out of open pots, and cap unused flues with ventilated caps.

Diagnostics

CCTV flue inspections and smoke tests

A camera survey shows the inside of the whole flue: cracks, gaps in the liner, blockages and damage you can't see from the fireplace or the roof. You get photos and a clear explanation of what we found.

Wildlife-safe

Bird nest removal

We remove nests and nesting debris, sweep the flue and fit a guard so it doesn't happen again. Wild birds' nests are protected by law while they're in use, so if a nest is active we'll check it and come back to remove it once it's no longer being used. That's usually from late summer onwards.

Chimney service FAQs

How often should I have my chimney swept?

At least once a year. If you burn wood regularly, twice a year is better: once before the burning season and once after. If you notice any signs of a blockage, book sooner. Our guide to how often to sweep your chimney goes into more detail.

Will there be any mess?

No. We put down dust sheets and run an industrial vacuum the whole time, so soot stays contained. We leave the hearth as clean as we found it, or cleaner.

Do I get a certificate for my insurance?

Yes. You get a sweeping certificate after every sweep. Many home insurers ask for proof of regular sweeping, especially after a chimney fire.

How long does a standard sweep take?

Usually 45 minutes to an hour. Nests, heavy creosote or a CCTV inspection add time, and we'll tell you before we start.

Can you remove a bird nest from my chimney?

Yes, once it's no longer in use. Disturbing an active nest is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. We check whether it's active and remove it as soon as the law allows, typically from late summer.
