If you're about to complete on a period property, the chimney is one of the easiest things to overlook, and one of the most expensive to get wrong. Here's what to check before you strike a match.
A CCTV chimney survey sends a camera the full length of the flue to show cracks in the lining, old repairs, structural movement, blockages and whether the flue suits your stove. A normal sweep can't show any of this. For an older property with a fire or stove you plan to use, it's the difference between an informed decision and an expensive surprise.
Why older chimneys need a closer look
Essex and Hertfordshire are full of homes that predate modern flue standards: Victorian terraces, Georgian townhouses, converted barns and cottages with inglenook fireplaces. A decades-old flue can look fine from the hearth and still hide cracked liners, old repairs, bird nests or structural movement that you can't see without a camera.

Listed buildings aren't a problem, but they need care
A common misconception is that owning a listed building complicates chimney work. It doesn't. Sweeping and inspecting a chimney doesn't need listed building consent.
