Inheriting a chimney with a new house is different from installing your own. Here's what's worth checking before you light your first fire in a home you've just moved into.
Find Out When It Was Last Swept
Ask the previous owner or estate agent if there's any record of the last sweep. If there isn't one, or nobody knows, treat it as overdue. A chimney that's sat unused over a house sale and move can also pick up nesting debris in the meantime.
Don't Assume the Flue Matches the Appliance
Older properties sometimes have a stove or fire that wasn't originally installed for that specific flue, or has been swapped out over the years without the flue being reassessed. An oversized or undersized flue for the appliance can cause draw problems or inefficient burning. This is one of the things we check as standard during a sweep.
Check for Building Regulations Compliance
If a wood burner was installed by the previous owner, it should have been signed off by a HETAS-registered installer or building control, with paperwork to prove it. If that paperwork isn't available, it doesn't mean something's wrong, but it's worth having the installation reviewed.
Consider a CCTV Inspection Before First Use
For a chimney you didn't install yourself, a CCTV inspection is often the safest starting point. It gives you a clear picture of the flue's condition, cracks, old repairs, structural issues, before you commit to regular use rather than finding out partway through winter.
Check the Chimney Pot and Cowl
A quick look (or have us check) at the pot and any cowl fitted can flag obvious issues like damage, missing bird guards, or a cowl that's not suited to your fuel type.
