When You're On Top, You're Never Really On Top

The dark side of competition: How a competitor paid for 16 fake negative reviews to attack our business in a single day

Stressed Latin American businesswoman in yellow shirt feels pressure at work, surrounded by crumpled papers and laptop. Concept of office stress, frustration, overwork.

Today, October 29th, 2025, we experienced something we never thought would happen to us.

In a single day, our business received 16 negative reviews - all one and two stars with the goal of getting us suspended. Then one of the reviewers confessed they were paid by a competitor - and demanded money to delete them.

What Happened Today

This morning started like any other day at Sweep Sisters. We were responding to customer inquiries, scheduling appointments, and doing what we love - helping families keep their homes safe with professional chimney services.

Then, the notifications started flooding in. One after another. Negative review after negative review. Within hours, we had accumulated 16 one and two-star reviews on our business profiles.

The reviews were generic, vague, and oddly similar in tone. None mentioned specific services, dates, or interactions. It felt wrong. But we had no proof... until someone messaged us.

"A guy ordered me to post negative review on your business and want to get it suspended."

We asked: Who?

"Your competitor."

We asked: Which competitor?

"That's private."

Then It Got Worse

After confessing that a competitor had paid them to attack our business with the specific goal of getting us suspended from review platforms, the person then demanded money to delete the fake reviews.

Let that sink in. Someone was paid to sabotage our business, admitted it, and then tried to extort us for money to undo the damage they were paid to cause.

When we asked which competitor was behind this attack, they refused to tell us, saying "That's private." They were willing to confess to the crime and try to extort us, but protecting their employer was apparently where they drew the line.

We did not pay. We will not pay. We refuse to reward this behavior or enable this kind of business practice to continue.

The Truth Comes Out

One of the people who left a negative review reached out to our personal WhatsApp. They openly admitted that a competitor had ordered them to post negative reviews with the explicit goal of getting our business suspended from review platforms.

While we appreciate their honesty, the damage was done. Our carefully built reputation - earned through years of hard work, professional service, and genuine customer care - was being undermined by someone too afraid to compete fairly.

But it didn't end there. After admitting what they'd done, they demanded payment to remove the reviews - turning sabotage into extortion.

Why This Happens

There's a harsh truth in business that we've learned today: When you're on top, you're never really on top.

Success attracts attention. When you're doing well, providing excellent service, and earning positive reviews from real customers, it makes others uncomfortable. Some competitors see your success and think, "How can I do better?" Others think, "How can I tear them down?"

We've worked incredibly hard to build Sweep Sisters into a trusted name across Essex and Hertfordshire. We're HETAS certified, we're professional, we care about our customers, and we take pride in every job we do. But apparently, that's threatening to someone.

What We're Doing About It

We're not sitting back and accepting this. Here's what we're doing:

  • Reporting to platforms: We've reported all suspicious reviews to Google, Facebook, and other review platforms with evidence of coordinated fraud.
  • Documenting everything: We have screenshots, timestamps, and the confession message as evidence of this attack.
  • Legal consultation: We're exploring legal options for defamation and business interference.
  • Transparency with you: We're being completely open with our customers about what happened because you deserve to know the truth.

A Message to Our Customers

If you're reading this, thank you. Thank you for your support, your trust, and your business. We've never taken any of it for granted.

We know that our real reputation is built on the work we do in your homes, not on fake reviews written by people who've never met us. Every satisfied customer, every safely swept chimney, every family we've helped keep warm and secure - that's our real legacy.

We're asking our genuine customers to help us combat this attack. If you've had a positive experience with Sweep Sisters, please consider leaving an honest review. Real voices matter more than paid lies.

The Lesson Here

This experience has taught us something important: Success breeds imitation and sometimes, sabotage. When you're doing things right, there will always be someone trying to drag you down because they're not willing to do the work to rise up themselves.

But we're not going anywhere. This attack won't stop us from providing the best chimney sweeping services in Essex and Hertfordshire. If anything, it's shown us how important our work is and how much we mean to our customers.

When you're on top, you're never really on top - because someone is always trying to knock you down. But staying on top means getting back up every time.

We're Still Here, Still Professional, Still Trusted

Our commitment to excellence hasn't changed. Neither has our dedication to you.

Thank you for standing with us. Your trust means everything.
